How Does Sleeping with Open Mouth at Night Affect Dental Health?
Sleep is vital for oral and dental health as well as general health. However, some habits that develop unconsciously during sleep can cause various problems in the oral structure. One of these is sleeping with the mouth open at night. This seemingly innocent habit can lead to serious consequences that can damage both teeth and gums over time. Especially in individuals who constantly breathe through the mouth, the risk of tooth decay increases, gum problems can be observed and the oral defence mechanism weakens.
Dry Mouth and Saliva Balance
Sleeping with the mouth open prevents saliva from accumulating sufficiently in the mouth. However, saliva is a natural defence mechanism for oral health. It balances the acidic environment, limits the growth of bacteria and reduces plaque formation with food residues. Breathing through the mouth during sleep removes this saliva defence and the mouth becomes drier. This dryness creates a favourable environment for tooth decay, bad breath and fungal infections.
Tooth Decay and Gum Problems
With the decrease in humidity in the mouth, the effect of caries-causing bacteria increases. Especially the chewing surfaces of the teeth and the areas between the gums and teeth become more vulnerable. When the protective effect of saliva disappears, the tooth enamel, which remains in an acidic environment overnight, weakens over time. This situation causes tooth decay to become easier. At the same time, dryness and irritation of the gums can be seen and inflammation, bleeding and gingival recession can be prepared.
Halitosis and Bacterial Balance Disruption
People who sleep with their mouth open are more likely to complain of bad breath in the morning. The main reason for this is anaerobic bacteria that multiply in the mouth during the night. These bacteria produce sulfur compounds that cause bad breath. Normally, saliva flow keeps these bacteria in balance, but this balance is disturbed in a dry mouth. The result can be an unpleasant breath odour in the morning. This may be a temporary morning odour, or it may become chronic in the long term.
Wear and Sensitivity of Teeth
Breathing through the mouth can lead to increased dryness of the tooth surfaces over time and thus increased sensitivity. Especially in the front teeth, microscopic cracks in the enamel can occur due to dryness, which can increase cold-hot sensitivity. At the same time, these deteriorations in the enamel layer can be disturbing in terms of aesthetic appearance. If sleeping with the mouth open is continuous, structural abrasions can also be seen on the teeth.
Causes and Precautions
The main conditions that cause sleeping with the mouth open at night include nasal congestion, sinusitis, adenoiditis, allergic rhinitis and sleep apnoea. Treatment of such problems can reduce the habit of breathing through the mouth. In addition, the negative effects of this condition can be alleviated by humidifying the air in the room before going to bed, drinking plenty of water, using intraoral humidifiers or using a night plate on the recommendation of a physician. If the problem persists, both ear, nose and throat and dentist examinations are recommended.
